The new development strategy for Roskilde Sydvest, The Gardens of the city, introduces new values to the district through a coherent and unified new green identity. The project, taking inspiration from the allotment garden concept, aims to transform and break down the scale of Æblehaven and Rønnebærparken with a focus on human interaction.

This approach has led to creating an open and attractive residential area for current residents, visitors, and potential newcomers. Also, it ushers in adding a new social hub to the district and strengthening the community and the social networks across different resident groups in the neighborhood.

“The gardens of the city – Sanctuaries and Communities” (Byens Haver – Fristeder og Fællesskaber) Site Plan

Introducing new scales to reconnect the different living areas

The landscape is a crucial catalyst for the new Roskilde Sydvest. Therefore, it has determined all strategic design decisions. The framework of the new master plan will further develop the human scale of the outdoor spaces.

Besides, the green areas will become the common denominator of gardens and communities, strengthening the unity of the different places and conceiving a welcoming atmosphere.

Using the communal green to enhance new communities

The project establishes new green connections and is also a strategy for new communities to emerge. The addition of new social services in Havepladsen, Idrætshaverne, and Baghaven will welcome new communities, associations, and future residents.

Our goal is to generate a more robust network of social communities and dispel the cultural and ethnic boundaries between the different inhabitants.

For the purpose of creating a stronger sense of community, the main activities are concentrated along the new linear park crossing the site in a succession of landscape typologies and Gardens.

Idrætshaverne centralizes sports activities and creates the framework for new associations.

Besides, Baghaven is a slow-recreation and relaxation area for children and their families. In addition, living spaces for residents and visitors are primarily in Havebyen and Havepladsen. It is a place where garden and farming communities are the focal points of the attraction, boosting community involvement and a feeling of pride and ownership from the locals. Also, Havepladsen will become the center of the new Roskilde Sydvest, including new amenities such as a community’s house and a health center.

A new Gateway to Roskilde’s nature

The main park path is in itself one of the major attractions of the proposal.
The gardens will become part of the green ring around Roskilde and will be integrated into the recreational network of the city. They will be an entryway to Hyrdehøj forest and connect the different infrastructures along the trail from the center of Roskilde. The school and the sports features will open up towards the park, ensuring greater accessibility to the facilities from the surrounding residential areas.

Moreover, its structure, connecting, and opening up the different recreational infrastructures towards the path will attract outsiders to the area. Here, there is room for various target groups to carry out a wide range of activities and uses throughout the day.
