Cemeteries as Recreational and Green Space

Urban areas are under increasing pressure to serve multiple purposes: supporting climate resilience, enhancing biodiversity, accommodating new construction, providing recreational spaces, promoting physical activity, hosting renewable energy facilities, and expanding infrastructure.

These demands place a heavy strain on our limited urban spaces.

We believe, cemeteries hold an untapped potential for new land uses, especially as our burial practices shift, with a growing preference for less space-intensive urn burials.

In Denmark, a number of cemeteries have already embraced strategic development projects, and more are likely to follow in the coming years.

The first is that we should integrate cemeteries better to their urban surroundings.

You can read the other four on Byrummonitor.
